On a balmy beautiful and serene December afternoon in 1972, wife Jane and I approached St. Augustine aboard our home built 46 foot sailing vessel Dursmirg. We were just wrapping up the four month long maiden voyage from Superior, Wisconsin up on the Great Lakes. Heading south in the Intracoastal Waterway, we partook of an enchanting view of Florida few ever get an opportunity to witness. We were treated to an astonishingly fresh glimpse into a world we weren’t mentally prepared for. Everything was as it should have been entering a pristine Garden of Eden abounding with natures finest at the peak of perfection where Georgia’s Sea Islands with their prolific salt marshes and big sounds melded into North Florida’s sand dunes and jungle wet lands all teaming with an abundance of vibrant wild life. We were beckoned to enter and linger.
After pleasantly passing Ponte Vedra and Palm Valley, we entered the North River also known as the Tolomato where the waters widened seemingly to quicken our pace in anticipation of our next surprise; the strange silhouette of a one-of-a-kind jewel just screaming out to us to enter and investigate. From our waterway vantage point, we got our first glimpse of a strange place off in the distance that was sure to draw us in and entice us to stay.
This point was the culmination of our five-year plan of escape. Jane was 28 years old and I was 32. There was no turning back now, we had sold everything, said our good-bys to family and friends and all we owned was aboard our floating home built Dursmirg.
St Augustine, Florida: We landed in amazement. This was a wondrous new world for us. There was so much to see. Where would we begin?
Our first instinctive reaction was to discover the historical stories linked to the myriad of curious monuments, statues and strange little streets. Inquisitively, we wanted to pry open the history behind the Ancient City’s objects of curiosity, each with its own ghostly ghastly story to tell.
First to catch our eye near the city marina pier landing was an unpretentious bronze statue in the central plaza near the foot of the Bridge of Lions. go to chapter 3
